Speaker Bio:
Karen graduated from the University of Manitoba, School of Medical Rehabilitation in Physical Therapy in 1995. Early in her career she developed a special interest in vestibular disorders. This led her to the USA for training from leading vestibular researchers such as Dr. S. Herdman, Dr. S. Whitney, Dr. R. Clendaniel, Dr. F. Horak and others. The desire to pursue research in vestibular disorders lead Karen to the Master of Science (Rehabilitation) program at the University of Manitoba in 2010. In 2013, Karen graduated with her MSc (Rehabilitation) degree. Her research was an innovative physiotherapy treatment protocol for those suffering peripheral vestibular disorders. While maintaining her busy private practice and consulting as the (vestibular) physiotherapist at the Pan Am Concussion Program, Karen teaches in the Master of Physical Therapy program at U of M.
Karen also teaches competency based courses for physiotherapists who desire to increase their knowledge and skills in treating those with vestibular disorders. She developed the “Fundamentals of Vestibular Rehabilitation: A Competency-Based Course” in 2016 and teaches throughout Canada as well as offering it annually in Winnipeg, MB. In 2018, Karen developed an advanced skills course to follow the “fundamentals course” titled, “Vestibular Rehabilitation: Beyond the Fundamentals” for those physiotherapists who had completed a competency based vestibular training course and had been practicing for a minimum of 1 year. Karen has a passion for vestibular physiotherapy so in addition to seeing patients, teaching and offering presentations regarding vestibular disorders, she mentors other vestibular trained physiotherapists.
