Training the Active Brain: Perception-Action Integration for the Older Adult

Jan 26, 2022 - 19:00 (EST)
1 hour

Webinar Description:

Perception-action integration may be impaired in older adults due to changes in sensory processing, sensorimotor integration, and/or movement coordination. Traditional approaches to rehabilitation tend to focus on internal cueing in predictable environments, whereas community-dwelling older adults may encounter greater, unpredictable challenges navigating the world day-to-day.

This webinar will discuss motor learning strategies for older adults using an ecological approach to rehab and exercise that encourages neuroplasticity and confidence for real-life scenarios outside of the clinic. Strategies include utilizing an external focus of attention, dual-tasking, and cognitive-motor integration for balance control and movement coordination.

In this webinar, we will discuss strategies that can be implemented into clinical practices to level-up exercise programming for community-dwelling older adults that includes the use of modern technology and low-cost applications for balance and dynamic movement coordination.

Speaker: Katie Mitchell, PhD(c), MScPT, CAT(C)

Katie is a clinician, PhD researcher, and educator. She is the owner of Thrive NeuroSport Rehabilitation and Performance, offering both in-clinic and telehealth care. Her clinical practice is specialized in connecting the brain and body across the lifespan for concussion, vestibular and complex orthopaedic conditions.

Katie is a PhD Candidate at Wilfrid Laurier University, focused on the relationship between postural control and autonomic function on a visual attention dual-task. She completed an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at WLU, advanced Athletic Therapy certificate at Mount Royal University, and Master of Science in Physical Therapy at Queen’s University. Katie has presented at conferences, including the International Society of Posture and Gait Research (ISPGR) Congress and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting. She is also the Lead Team Therapist for Sledge Team Ontario and supports varsity athletics at the University of Waterloo.

Upon Completing This Webinar Participants Will Be Able To:

  1. Understand how the perception-action cycle can be affected in older adults and how to utilize motor learning strategies to enhance interventions for seniors.
  2. Implement new technology and DIY strategies for sensory and cognitive integrations ( e.g., visual perception, dual-tasking, cognitive-motor integration).
