Inspiratory Muscle Training: A Review of Current Evidence for Use in Practice
Inspiratory Muscle Training: A Review of Current Evidence for Use in Practice
1 hour
Overview:
Inspiratory muscle training has evidence for use in a broad range of cardiopulmonary settings, including “prehab,” assistance in weaning from mechanical ventilation, reduction in pulmonary complications following neurological insults and use as part of pulmonary rehab in many lung conditions. However, IMT continues to be an under-utilized tool in the physical therapists’ toolkit.
IMT comes with a small price tag, which may still provide enough of a barrier to widespread application; or it may simply be that it is still a relatively unknown topic. This webinar will review the current evidence behind the use of IMT in a variety of clinical settings.
Participants will understand the mechanisms and benefits behind IMT; review contraindications and learn application protocols to determine if IMT would be useful in their practice.
This webinar is brought to you by the Cardiorespiratory Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA).
Objectives:
By the end of this webinar, participants will understand:
- Describe the benefits and contraindications of Inspiratory Muscle Training
- Evaluate and critique the use of IMT in various clinical populations
- Apply IMT within a cardiorespiratory population
Price:
- Free for Cardiorespiratory Division Members (please check your email for instructions - you will be provided with a coupon code to register)
- $60 for CPA members
- $75 for Non-CPA Members

Speaker Bio: Jessica DeMars
Jessica graduated from the University of Alberta in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy (with distinction) and is the owner of Breathe Well Physio. She continued her education with numerous post-graduate courses in manual therapy, myofascial release, and acupuncture. In 2006, after attending a physiotherapy symposium, she discovered the missing element in her practice - breathing. After attending her first course in breathing biofeedback, she began to integrate breathing retraining into her practice.
In 2010, she traveled to New Zealand to become certified in the BradCliff Method® of breathing retraining. In 2016 she completed further certificates with the Graduate School of Behavioural Health Sciences under Peter Litchfield, which allows her to focus on the behavioural aspects of dysfunctional breathing. In 2015 she was awarded a grant through the Clinical Research Innovation Fund and investigated the link between dysfunctional breathing and asthma in children.
The Canadian Instructor for the New Zealand-based BradCliff Method®, Jessica has also traveled across Canada presenting and lecturing on the impacts of dysfunctional breathing on health, with recent keynote speeches at the Saskatchewan Lung Association Conference and the 2019 International Association for Dance Medicine & Science Conference.
Jessica uses inspiratory muscle training often in her practice, in a variety of patient populations, and feels IMT is an easy and effective tool to integrate into practice.
