Description:

International guidelines consistently recommend persistent low back pain is viewed, and managed, using a person-centered biopsychosocial approach. This talk will include reference to one such approach (Cognitive Functional Therapy) to low back pain, and the implications of the latest clinical trials for (i) training of healthcare professionals, and (ii) healthcare design and delivery.


Objectives:

  1. Review multidimensional mechanisms of pain
  2. Present a clinical reasoning approach to low back pain disorders
  3. Appraiase the supporting evidence for/against Cognitive Functional Therapy for low back pain
  4. Discuss development of competency in the skills (communication, movement, behavioural) required to deal with complex pain problems

Speaker Bio: Kieran O'Sullivan, PhD

Kieran O’Sullivan is a Professor in Physiotherapy at the University of Limerick, Ireland. He completed his PhD on low back pain in 2012. He has published over 170 journal articles, including two randomized clinical trials on low back pain. He was awarded the 2021 President’s award for research excellence and impact at UL. His research on LBP has been chosen as an exemplar of research impact. He is currently involved in several research projects relating to musculoskeletal pain, nationally and internationally.
