Overview
This webinar will provide updated information and literature that were published since the first Congenital Diastasis of Rectus Abdominis (cDRA) webinar in November 2021. You can find the recording of this first webinar here. We strongly recommend that you watch the first webinar ahead of this upcoming webinar.
In this webinar, we will:
- Review the signs and symptoms of cDRA (orange and red flags)
- Discuss the suggested classification and measurements for children
- Introduce the posture break test specific for patients' problems
- Introduce the novel dynamic neuromuscular stabilization test
- Teach reasoning treatment. This includes:
- Anatomy and function of the muscles and the trunk
- The need to close the gap as much as possible
- Treatment sequence for normal development
- Awareness of the pressure systems (M. Massery)
- Various disorders and symptoms
- Use tape to assess and inform the brain
Treatment goals and suggestions will be presented, including various case examples.
Learning Objectives
In this webinar, you will learn to:
- Describe the signs and symptoms of diastasis
- Understand the important roles of the linea alba and rectus abdominis muscle in force transmission
- Describe the new classification and assessments used in children
- Understand how to use the posture break test
- Understand how to use tape as an assessment (and treatment) tool
- Be able to apply concepts of exercise sequencing to the variety of patients presenting with cDRA
- Apply knowledge of the physiological movement direction of skin and have an understanding of the effects of skin stretch when using tape

The instructors

Esther de Ru is a physiotherapist from the Netherlands whose passion and energy for all things related to pediatrics is stunning. Maybe best known for her work in elastic therapeutic taping, she is keenly interested in skin, our outer brain, using skin stretch and massage to enhance movement and address dysfunction. Her other passion is scoliosis management. She is certified in NDT Bobath, NDT/Mueller, pre-logopedia, Vojta, Sports, Orthopedic Manual Therapy, P.N.F., Bugnet, Sensory Motor Therapy & Motor Remedial Teaching. She developed the Skin Approach to Taping method and she has published on this topic.
As past chair of the Committee Practice of the IOPTP (International Organisation of Physical Therapists in Paediatrics) and international instructor and author, Esther emphasizes the need to work very hands-on in our profession.
Semi-retired, Esther travelled the world teaching and sharing her knowledge as a true clinician who values not only the evidence base, but the patient's experience and the intuitive wisdom that comes with real work in the real world. She has gained her experience working in four European countries. She is a respected international speaker, and provides mentoring to therapists world wide through the Clinical Excellence Online CEO WiredOn program.
